10 year Prison Sentence for Placerville Methamphetamine Dealer Who Did Not ID His Source

SACRAMENTO --United States Attorney McGregor W. Scott announced today that ISRAEL LARA-VENTURA, 26, of Placerville was sentenced today by United States District Judge Garland E. Burrell, Jr., to 10 years imprisonment.

The defendant pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine before Judge Burrell on May 19, 2006. This case is the product of an investigation by the DEA in which an undercover DEA agent arranged to buy from the defendant seven ounces of methamphetamine on three separate occasions.

According to Assistant United States Attorney Matthew D. Segal, who prosecuted the case, Judge Burrell, in sentencing the defendant, said that the defendant faced the 10-year mandatory minimum because LARA-VENTURA's explanation of where he got the methamphetamine was incredible. If the he had told the truth about his drug source, he could have been sentenced to years less than the 10 years he received.
