Coloma Valley

The Coloma Valley lies in the Sierra foothills, in the heart of California's Gold Country. In its center is the South Fork of the American River, made famous in 1848 when California's first gold was discovered in its stream bed at Sutter's Mill. Today this river is also known throughout California for its inviting and exciting whitewater rapids. Along the river banks lie the beautiful rural communities of Coloma and Lotus, with their ranches, vineyards, campgrounds, and small-town businesses. Three riverfront parks provide opportunities for family picnics and wading, and Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park brings California's history to life. Fall 2003 Highlights After a busy summer, we're enjoying the cool crisp nights and warm sunny days of fall. The parks and river are quieter and everyone's moving at a more relaxed pace. It's an ideal time to visit if you like to avoid the crowds. We're looking forward to the community potluck picnic on Sunday, September 28, sponsored by the Coloma-Lotus Valley Community Association (CLVCA). Last year's event brought lots of families together -- we enjoyed seeing old friends and making new ones. On the weekend of October 11-12 we hope you'll join us for 49er Family Days and taste life during the California Gold Rush at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. Enjoy tours of Sutter's Mill, gold rush music, costumed volunteers, gold panning contests and a merchants market. Details about both events and others in the Coloma Valley Calendar. www.coloma.com
