You may not find gold, but you’ll feel like
you’ve “struck it rich” when you visit Ponderosa Park Campground. There
are not only an abundance of facilities and recreational amenities at the
resort, but the surrounding countryside is filled with the exciting history of
the California gold rush era.
Just a few miles away, at Capt. John Sutter’s sawmill near Coloma, is where
John Marshall discovered gold in 1848 and the great California gold rush began.
Travel from Coloma to several of the surrounding restored rustic towns to relive
an important era in the state’s history. Abandoned diggings en route are a
reminder of the hardships and disappointments of men seeking their fortunes. The
rivers in the foothill region are popular spots for white-water rafting,
kayaking, and canoeing.
At Coloma, the 276-acre Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park contains the
1860 cabin where Marshall lived, a statue of him pointing toward his discovery
in the distance, and a replica of Sutter’s Mill.
To the north of the resort is Auburn and its historic Old Auburn area, filled
with restored mid-19th-century buildings. Of significance are the firehouse, the
oldest post office in California (still in use), and the Gold Country Museum
where you can try panning for gold. Adjacent to the museum is the Bernhard
Museum, with its restored Victorian house and surrounding buildings containing
displays depicting coppering, blacksmithing, and winemaking.
