This letter is a direct rebuttal to Walter Mathews’ letter that appeared in the Wednesday, October 25 Democrat.
My mother taught me an important lesson many, many years ago. It went something like this: “Never trust a person who is always pointing the finger of blame and contempt at everyone else. They do this so that no one will notice how bad they are. That person has forgotten that the other 4 digits are pointing backward at themselves.”
Furthermore, another of her favorite sayings was: “If you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all”!! I guess that she forgot to tell me that it doesn’t apply to politics.
Briggs is filling the mail with pure garbage. Now Mathews is filling the Democrat with the same! If Briggs is so aware of the environment, why is he deluging us with lies in his mailers? I get it. He wants to keep the trees in El Dorado County so that he’ll have a never-ending supply of mailers to bash anyone who stands in his way! About the lies in these mailers: the public sees them, but doesn’t hear the backroom excuses from Briggs when confronted. What lies? Ask Briggs if you can get him to show up at a forum. Does anyone remember why our District is needing a new Supervisor? If I recollect correctly, I believe it had something to do with Charlie Briggs – er, I mean Paine not showing up to do his job. Hmmm, was that a Freudian slip, or is there a distinct similarity? Will Briggs show up only when there’s a benefit to him like he’s doing in his campaign? That brings up another question: What ulterior motives does a man have who would spend well over double the salary of a supervisor to be a Supervisor? Kinda makes you wonder what’s in it for Briggs if he gets in, doesn’t it?
So, Mr. Mathews, you and your compadre Briggs don’t like County employees? We’re all conspirators, eh? There is absolutely NO need to attack a candidate’s wife for being gainfully employed. If Briggs gets his way all of El Dorado County will be a “Bedroom Community” to Sacramento because there won’t be any jobs left up here! Wouldn’t that be just wonderful? Maybe you should do some investigation into the reasons the Employee Association didn’t support Briggs. You might find out that they were able to see through the nasty, deceitful, and hateful campaign that Briggs is running, and voted to support the only honest, worthy candidate for District 4 Supervisor – Norm Krizl.
My son graduated from El Dorado High School in 2000. During his years at EDHS, the school credo was “NO PUT-DOWNS”. We have raised our kids to believe in this. Now they have to read the trash that you (Mathews) have written, and read everything that Briggs is spreading all over the County. So much for education. Oh yes, that’s probably something that the school forgot to tell its students: “That doesn’t apply to politics” Sad, isn’t it? Most of us live up here for the quality of life. Why don’t you low-life liars take your politics elsewhere?

Please note: The Mountain Democrat was considerate enough to put a title on this "letter to the Editor" before publishing it on Nov 1, 2006. They were also kind enough to eliminate the final paragraph. Not sure if they don't want the public to be reminded that this type of politics hurts our kids and goes against everything they're taught in school and in most homes, or if they don't like me calling these people low-life liars. Whatever! At least they published most of it. I don't know about anyone out there, but I do know that I am soooo tired of all the lies and bad-mouthing that goes on today. I believe it is time for us to speak out and let these losers know we don't want anything to do with them!
