Witnesses say the man was standing outside a bar on Broadway and Smith Flat Roads in Placerville when a driver of a Ford Diesel pickup truck came barreling off the road and struck him sending his body 100 feet in the air. One witness tried to save the man by performing CPR, but the victim died at the scene.

Meanwhile, the driver who struck the victim kept going, according to witnesses. A driver in another car who saw the crash followed the woman who has been identified by police as Carla Zaun, 53.

Placerville police say the witness who followed Zaun saw her ditch her truck and call a friend to pick her up. When her friend arrived they drove to a nearby home. Police were called to that home where Zaun and her friend were arrested.

Detectives say they are not ruling out the possibility that the alleged hit and run was intentional because witnesses say the truck seemed to deliberately leave the road and there is a possibility that Zaun and the victim knew one another.

Police say Zaun's blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit. She has been booked at the El Dorado County Jail.
