The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors has awarded a contract for nearly $18.4 million for construction of the first phase of the Highway 50/Missouri Flat Road interchange project to Nehemiah Construction Inc.

The project, awarded Tuesday, is intended to relieve current congestion, add capacity and provide safety improvements to the interchange and adjacent roadways.

The first phase of the project will include:

- Construction of a new Missouri Flat Road overcrossing of Highway 50

- Widening of Missouri Flat Road from south of Perks Court to north of Plaza Drive

- Improvements to adjoining roadways and commercial access

- Improvements to Highway 50 ramps

- Associated utility and facility improvements

Nehemiah Construction's bid was the lowest of four bids submitted for the project, and was approximately $2.2 million below the engineer's estimate, according to a county news release.

The project is expected to take 18 to 24 months to complete.

A subsequent phase will include additional improvements to interchange ramps, widening and retrofitting portions of Highway 50 and the Weber Creek bridges to better withstand earthquakes, and adding auxiliary lanes on the highway between Missouri Flat Road and the Placerville Drive/Forni Road interchanges.
