The Cozmic Cafe is more than just cozmic. You can tell it's a special place. The vibe is awesome. We drove over the hills to Placerville to check out Jackpot and Two Sheds upstairs at the cafe. Both bands sounded great in this historic venue. We had a wonderful time. The bar offers lots of quality microbrews on tap as well as COLD Newcastle in a bottle. Hard to beat Downtown Brown on tap. Downstairs is more funky coffee shop. They make damn good chai! Everything about the Cozmic Cafe exudes five stars.
some people use driving to tahoe as an excuse to *have to* go to in & out (and since you're there you just have to get that double double with animal style fries. and a milkshake...right.) but if you find yourself shaking/in cold sweats without a cafe gratitude nearby, consider this your psych ward. fresh, delicious, organic, hippie-ness at its best. plus an awesome cave to explore, intriguing books on the bookshelf, and a public meetinghouse slash concert venue on the second floor. if you've ever substituted soy milk in your hot beverage, or even if you've recently thought about it, you should stop here next time you are on your way to or from the 'hoe.
OK so my iced non-fat latte wasn't the best I had
ever had. I was so tempted to try the jalapeno tuna melt but it was
still breakfast time. Instead we explored the mine shaft through the
back of the place. I like how they have tables and chairs in there to
hang out. It was nice and cool in there on this warm day. We
next ventured upstairs and saw the cool bar. If it was drinkin' time,
I wouldn't mind throwing back a few cold ones up there. Instead, we
were invited to a Buddhist meeting that was about to start.
We totally enjoyed the chanting and most of the conversation. What an
experience! All we were expecting was organic coffee.
One of my favorite new places to visit. The historic building that is the Cozmic Cafe is beautiful. Hippie coffee shop downstairs, cool bohemian bar upstairs, photograghy exhibit in the stairwell, and a mine shaft to boot! I love having the option of alcohol or caffeine, two of my favorite stimulants. I can't always drink alcohol, I love a caffeine high, too. The bartenders were a little strange, but I didn't care much since I was drinking coffee. We saw two awesome bands, and there are yoga classes in the same room during the week. They also have an extensive organic food menu, but we didn't eat there. Just partied.
I tend to agree with Norm L., except the food is good. Give it a try and see for yourself. It is a neat location and great for kids to explore.
Good points: this place is in the old Placerville
Sodaworks building (here since the gold rush days). In fact, there is a mine
tunnel in the basement that you can check out if you wish. The coffee and
food is typical coffeehouse fare. Upstairs, there is a beer & wine bar
and a stage for live music on weekends.
Bad points: it's a hangout for the local street urchins and lowlifes. I've
seen (and smelled) obviously stoned 15-year-olds there, and seen adults
taking beers outside to give to minors. Local sentiment is starting to turn
on the owners, and the Placerville PD is starting to pay more attention to
the place.
If you're a tourist, it's fun to check out during the day. If you're local -
there's other coffeehouses in town more worthy of your support.
This has gotta be the coolest thing in Placerville, which doesn't say a lot for Placerville. Organic, free-trade coffee, decent music, and a semi-laid-back atmosphere. The sanwiches are okay, and they do have a pretty good veggie menu. It's probably the coolest thing (aside from the Fair Play and Amador County wine country) between Sacramento and Tahoe.
