Edwin Soper Kills Alfred Carretta in Big Rig Crash

DIAMOND SPRINGS - The California Highway Patrol is recommending that prosecutors charge a big-rig driver who crashed into four cars and killed a man on Highway 12 on Saturday with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, CHP spokesman Officer Adrian Quintero said.

Officers said Edwin Soper, 56, of Diamond Springs was driving a freight truck west on Highway 12 near Terminous as fast as 55 mph when he failed to slow down for traffic stopped for an open Delta bridge.

The resulting crash killed Alfred Edward Carretta III, 47, of Benicia. The county coroner's office said Carretta had family in Illinois but an address in the Bay Area town.
