Placerville, CA… At their January 28, 2008 meeting, El Dorado Irrigation District(EID) Board members authorized a resolution to accept a $118,236 grant from the Sierra Nevada Conservancy. The grant will fund a project to examine the effects of recreational activities on water quality in the South Fork American River watershed. The results of site assessments throughout the watershed will establish a water quality baseline against which future impacts can be measured. The project will also identify recreational activities that potentially contribute to water quality degradation, prioritize the activities in terms of pollution contribution, and develop innovative recommendations for managing the polluting activities.
“This project is critical to the health of our water supplies,” said Board Vice President George Wheeldon. “Without a credible information baseline, it will be difficult to take corrective action should that be necessary in the future.”
The project was identified in the Integrated Regional Watershed Management Plan adopted by the Cosumnes, American, Bear, and Yuba River (CABY) consortium that consists of non-profit, private, and governmental entities across the region. EID will administer the grant. The District and partners from Eldorado National Forest, Georgetown Divide Resource Conservation District, and Alpine Watershed Group will contribute staff time and some materials as part of the project.
