El Dorado Trail Memorial Plaques $458

El Dorado Trail, a popular nature trail in Placerville, looks more like Plaque Trail, and the city now wants to get a handle on what has become a financial and emotional controversy.

People wishing to place a memorial plaque along the trail would be required to pay an installation fee and make a contribution toward trail improvements under a proposed policy governing monuments, memorials and plaques on city property.

The proposal presented to the City Council on Tuesday calls for a fee of $458 per plaque. It would include $253 for installation, $5 for maintenance and a $200 contribution for trail improvements.      READ MORE

The County is actively developing this trail within the old Michigan/California Railroad right-of-way. The old railroad ran from Placerville east through Smith Flat and up to Camino. The first 2 miles of this trail corridor through Placerville has been developed by the city and is used by many residents and visitors. The county has constructed a new trailhead in Smith Flat and a bridge over Highway 50 that allows trail users access to another 4 miles of trail into Camino. Once completed the trail will connect to the National Pony Express Trail Route and the proposed Sacramento-Placerville Rail Trail, which ultimately links the communities of South Lake Tahoe and the Sacramento Valley region.
