El Dorado yields big boost in crop values

Favorable weather and even fire were credited for a 37 percent increase in El Dorado County's overall crop values in 2006, and agricultural officials predict early harvests for grapes and apples this year if mild temperatures continue.

According to the county's 2006 Agricultural Crop & Livestock Report released last week, crop values in El Dorado County totaled $58.8 million last year, compared with $42.9 million in 2005.

Bill Stephans, county agricultural commissioner, attributed the rise to several factors. These included a 75 percent increase in timber, because of fire salvage, and a 25.8 percent increase in figures for fruit and nut sales that resulted in part from a more accurate collection of data. ...
