In El Dorado Hills, it has become the social gathering of the year for the canine set. Approximately 250 dogs, accompanied by their owners, turned out for the fourth annual Bark in Community Park on Sunday. "I always wanted to do something for dogs and their families," said Janet Kenneweg, recreation supervisor with the El Dorado Hills Community Services District. Though it boasts a large canine population, the community lacks a dog park, she noted. Bark in Community Park was launched four years ago with the sponsorship of a local veterinarian, Kenneweg said, and this year's event drew the largest turnout yet. Sunday's cool temperatures were ideal for performances and demonstrations by the Hangtown Kennel Club, Disc Dogs of the Golden Gate, Dana Smith and his performing dog Lacey, Canine Companions for Independence and the El Dorado County Sheriff's K-9 Team. In addition, Kenneweg said, 30 to 40 dogs competed in the costume contest. Vendors also showed dog-related wares, and rescue groups and nonprofit agencies provided information.
