Firefighters are battling a rapidly growing grass fire on the outskirts of El Dorado Hills.

The fire began around 10:20 a.m. Tuesday and has grown to more than 35 acres near Wetsel-Oviatt Road, said Tobie Edmonds, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The fire was not threatening any homes in the area, but was burning near the Blackstone community, according to an online California Highway Patrol traffic incident report. The blaze is threatening The Grace Foundation of Northern California, an animal rescue facility home to more than 100 horses.

Latrobe Road has been shut down from Wetsel-Oviatt Road to Cothrin Ranch Road due to firefighting efforts.

Eleven Cal Fire crews were on the scene initially, and many more are being called in, Edmonds said.
