One works with college students to help tutor Boys & Girls Clubs youths. The other volunteers her business expertise to assist nonprofit arts groups.

Together, Folsom Lake College professors Linda Malloy and Susan Wheeler were recognized recently for their community contributions.

Malloy, an English professor, was honored by the El Dorado County Western Slope Boys & Girls Clubs as recipient of their Education Partner of the Year.

The Arts & Business Council of Sacramento honored Wheeler, a business associate professor, as Business Volunteer of the Year.

"I commend Susan and Linda for their dedication in giving back to the community and working in partnership with local organizations," Folsom Lake College President Thelma Scott-Skillman said in a news release.

Two years ago, Malloy began having her English Education 320 students tutor three hours a week at the Boys & Girls club in Placerville as part of an afterschool program.

For the community college students the tutoring is called "early field experience" and is part of the college's teacher preparation program, a partnership with California State University, Sacramento.

Malloy, a Shingle Springs resident, initiated the tutoring program at the college's El Dorado Center and it has proven popular with her students.

"They've really loved it. They get to do a lot of lesson planning," said Malloy, who has taught at the college for 18 years.

Joan Stek, executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs, said the tutoring program "is something we need so much."
