Latcham, president of the El Dorado Winery Association, presents a donation on behalf of EDWA to Harry Zelinka, board chairman of the Food Bank of El Dorado County.El Dorado's family-owned wineries gave a boost to the area's Senior Brown Bag Program this month by making a donation of nearly $5,300 to the Food Bank of El Dorado County. Local winemakers raised the funds by hosting a wine tasting and auction.
Several local businesses supported the event through their donations, including California Lamb, Mercedes-Benz of El Dorado Hills, Zachary Jacques Restaurant, Gold Vine Grill, Gaudio Culinary, Karen's Bakery Café, Beth Sogaard Catering, Z Pie and Dedrick's Main Street Cheese as well as Sierra Style Publications and Sacramento Magazine.
"The Food Bank does a fantastic job of feeding the county's hungry through more than 50 charity organizations," said Jon Latcham, president of the El Dorado Winery Association and owner of Granite Springs Winery in Fair Play. "El Dorado's family-owned wineries are grateful for the Food Bank's efforts and we know our donations go a long way with this organization."
The winery association has raised $8,500 for the Food Bank in the last two years.
Through its relationship with food suppliers, the Food Bank is able to leverage each dollar donated up to nine times its value, according to Mike Sproull, executive director.
For example, the El Dorado Winery Association's $5,300 donation will be turned into approximately $47,000 worth of food that assists more than 600 seniors in Placerville, Cameron Park, El Dorado Hills, Georgetown, Mt. Aukum, Pollock Pines and South Lake Tahoe.
