An ex-California Highway Patrol officer charged with on-duty sexual misconduct has pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor charge and been sentenced to 120 days in jail.
The charge stemmed from an incident in May 2004. Authorities said William Earl Cummins, who was assigned to the CHP Placerville office, pulled over a 23-year-old Tahoe woman driving eastbound on US-50 near Kyburz for allegedly speeding. He reportedly said he wouldn't write a citation in return for a sexual favor. The criminal complaint said Cummins threatened to arrest and incarcerate the woman, then see that she was deported. The woman is an undocumented immigrant. The woman did not comply with Cummins but was not ticketed.
The CHP learned of the incident last January when a friend of the woman reported it.
After an initial investigation, the CHP turned what had become a criminal matter over to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department.
