Jeff Mitchell’s murderer still at large
El Dorado Hills resident and Sacramento County Sheriff Deputy Jeff Mitchell, who was an avid baseball fan, was killed in 2006 while on duty and this past weekend Jeff Mitchell Field and Public Service Memorial was dedicated in his honor.
“A Little League field is perfect,” said Mitchell’s widow Crystal. “That was his passion.”
The existing ball field, located at 831 Redwood Lane in El Dorado Hills near Bertelsen Park, was renovated and redesigned as a state-of-the-art Little League field with a memorial wall that will honor local public service heroes. The project is a community undertaking with support and participation by numerous local individuals, businesses and organizations.
“When they first came to me it was so soon after Jeff had been killed that it didn’t really hit me what they were doing,” Crystal Mitchell said. “It’s been three years now, and I think it’s a wonderful idea. It has so much meaning.”
In the early morning hours of Friday, Oct. 27, 2006, Mitchell was patrolling a rural area of Sacramento County near Meiss and Dillard roads. He was shot during a routine traffic stop. Other deputies found Mitchell dead at the scene from a single gunshot wound to the head. His killer is still on the loose.
