New Medical Director for EDC (EMS) Agency

The El Dorado County Public Health Department and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency are pleased to announce the appointment of David Brazzel, M.D. to the position of EMS Medical Director of El Dorado County. Dr. Brazzel is board certified in emergency medicine and has practiced as an emergency room physician for the past 17 years. As the EMS Medical Director, Dr. Brazzel will provide medical expertise, oversight and quality assurance for pre-hospital care that is conducted in El Dorado County.

“Dr. Brazzel has an excellent background in emergency medicine and will be a great asset to our county,” said Gayle Erbe-Hamlin, Director of the Public Health Department. According to Erbe-Hamlin, the EMS Medical Director is the physician through which paramedics, emergency medical technicians and other first responders in the county are authorized to do their work. The Medical Director supports paramedics in the field, approves medical protocols, ensures that emergency responders are up-to-date on their training, and works in conjunction with hospitals.

“Our job in the EMS Agency is to ensure high quality pre-hospital care in El Dorado County,” said Dr. Brazzel. “We want to make sure the patient is well cared for from the time the ambulance arrives until they are taken into the hospital. So far, I’ve been very impressed with our local paramedics and other first responders. There appears to be a genuine respect and caring of the patient.”

Dr. Brazzel comes to El Dorado County with a strong background and experience in emergency medicine. He has worked as an attending physician in the emergency department at Mercy Hospital of Folsom since 1994, and at Mercy General Hospital, Sacramento since 1999. Prior to that, he served as a doctor in the emergency department at Woodland Memorial Hospital. He earned his medical degree from the University of California at Irvine.

Dr. Brazzel is active in the community and is fluent in Spanish. For the past 15 years, he has traveled yearly to central Mexico as a volunteer doctor to team up with doctors, nurses and dentists there to provide health education and medical services to children in need.

Dr. Brazzel says he was drawn to El Dorado County because he saw that there was a strong sense of team work and the promotion of high standards within the first responder community. In addition to medical oversight, he hopes to serve as a mentor and educational resource to first responders.
