For those who want a closer glimpse of the heavens, the Cameron Park Rotary Club Community Observatory has become a popular option.

During an open house Oct. 4, docent Nicole Gauthier  introduced Gary McClanahan to the world of celestial viewing at the facility adjacent to Folsom Lake College El Dorado Center in Placerville.

The observatory, which features two 14-inch telescopes, is open free to the public from 8:30 to 10:30 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. The facility is also used by students, including community college classes.

A project of the Rotary Club of Cameron Park, the observatory opened last summer and is a partnership of the service club, the Los Rios Community College District and the El Dorado County Office of Education.
