Come June, motorists traveling on Highway 50 through Placerville can expect to see flags flying over a veterans memorial monument as they pass the county government center off Ray Lawyer Drive.
... The Board of Supervisors agreed last month to declare the monument a county project, with county employees overseeing construction on county-owned property. Funds also will be allocated to cover costs for wheelchair-accessible walkways and the memorial wall.
... Veterans thanked supervisors and county staff members. John Collens, 81, a retired Air Force major general and spokesman for Friends of the El Dorado County Veterans Memorial Monument, said he looks forward to seeing the memorial completed before he turns 82. Without the county's help, he said, "I don't know how many more years it would have taken to raise all of the money to build the monument the way it should be."
... He praised county staff members for their cooperation. "I'm confident that we will be able to accomplish a project that we will all be proud of," Wolfe said.
