Raley's Grant to Help Buy Police Dog for EDC

By Niesha Lofing - Bee Staff Writer The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office is one step closer to adding another four-legged crime fighter to their ranks thanks to a grant from Nestle Purina and Raley's.

Nestle Purina and Raley’s are presenting a $5,000 donation to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department’s K-9 Unit to help purchase a new service dog. Following the check presentation, the Sheriff’s Department will host a K-9 Unit skills demonstration for students from Buckeye Elementary School and other event attendees to learn more about training programs for service dogs.

The two companies are donating $5,000 to the sheriff's K-9 unit, which will be used to help purchase a new service dog, Sgt. Bryan Golmitz said in a news release.

The companies will present sheriff's officials with the grant Oct. 3 at the Placerville Drive Raley's store.

In an on-going effort to provide a public service to communities with canine partners, Nestle Purina along with Raley’s have selected the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department as the recipient of a $5,000 donation to purchase a new service dog, which will join the seven existing K-9 units. 

The presentation will take place Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at the Raley’s located at 166 Placerville Drive in Placerville.

Representatives from Nestle Purina, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department and Raley’s will be on-site. The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department K-9 units are planning several demonstrations as part of the program. El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department K-9 units are trained in narcotics and bomb detection, tracking and criminal apprehension.

The new service dog will join seven others that comprise the sheriff's K-9 unit. El Dorado County Sheriff's service dogs are trained in narcotics and bomb detection, tracking and criminal apprehension, Golmitz said.
