Mormon Island Dam, Worries about it slipping

Wills, a former architect, said she grew around the dams, explaining why his/her father was an engineer on the Pedro dam at the east of Modesto. Wills, a resident of Fair Oaks is concerned that the auxiliary dam of Mormon island shows signs of slippage.

Since approximately 1995, the wills indicated, she was worried by a section of the Mormon Island Dam on the side of the south of the lake Folsom and the north of the green valley road between the blue ravine road in Folsom and the expressway of Sophia in hills of EL Dorado.

Being along the edge of the road last week, said thought it moved to reveal a relatively naked band of the gravel which finishes in bottom, starting at the top of the dam, just at the edge of the green valley road across from the Mormon Island marshes.

Wills believes that it is a sign of slippage along the ground dam. "It is a warning sign," she said. "I would like to see that somebody do something this moment." The marshes at the south side of the green valley road exist partly because of the infiltration of the lake Folsom, she said.

While there is much discussion to reinforce levees along the rivers of Sacramento-sector, Wills worries about the proposal to raise the level of Folsom Dam, alleging that an auburn dam would provide a greater safety.

The answer: Drew Lessard, an engineer with the federal Bureau of Reclamation, said he noted Wills comments. But Lessard indicated that it thinks that what can seem to be slippage in the dam face ts a spot is where the new face of dam, built at the beginning of the Nineties, joins the old face of dam. As an element of the seismic project of reinforcement he says an excavation occurred along the face of the dam, and of the stone columns were installed in the ground between the face of the dam and the green road of valley. The old face was more shear than the new, he indicated.

The water of the lake Folsom infiltrates in the marshes, however much of what accumulates comes there from precipitations, he said. "all the ground dams which have water on them will infiltrate at a point," Lessard said, but which is not looked on as a danger.

If the dam Folsom thereafter is increased to ensure a greater protection of flood for the area of Sacramento, the aforementioned additional work of Lessard is projected to improve safety of the Mormon Island Auxiliary dam. "We will put a larger face on top going down," it said, explaining that it will be prolonged towards the green valley road.

Moreover travel out of jet says it the jointing will be employed to reinforce the sector around the stone columns to increase stability. That work can start in approximately 18 months, he indicated.

While waiting, said Lessard, he would speak to the employees who regularly inspect the dam about the sector which encouraged the concern of the Wills. "we have people to inspect it on a current basis," he said. "the more the water is high, the more we look at it. I will alert the inspector with this sector to keep an eye on top."
