Trent Birt of El Dorado Hills Arrested in Tahoe

A 56-year-old El Dorado Hills man led law-enforcement officers on a high-speed chase down Pioneer Trail early Sunday morning, authorities said.

At about 4 a.m., a South Lake Tahoe police officer received a report of a silver Hyundai running a stop sign at the corner of Pioneer Trail and Glen Road.

The officer spotted a vehicle matching the description traveling west on Pioneer Trail near Larch Avenue.

As the officer tried to pull the vehicle over, the Hyundai sped off, according to police Lt. Marty Hale.

The officer pursued the Hyundai and called for support from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office. Two deputies from the office joined the pursuit, which approached speeds of 70 mph, Hale said.

During the pursuit, the vehicle allegedly crossed the double yellow lines, drove on the shoulder of the road for approximately 200 yards and ran a red light at Pioneer Trail and Al Tahoe Boulevard.

Officers from the California Highway Patrol deployed spike strips near the corner of Busch Way and Pioneer Trail and successfully disabled the vehicle.

South Lake Tahoe police arrested the man, Trent Birt, on suspicion of driving under the influence and evading arrest.
